South Korean movie and television star Han Hyo-joo is joining the American TV series "Treadstone" that will launch on the cable channel USA Network. The actress, best known for her work in the film "W" (2016) and the Korean drama series "Spring Waltz" (2006), will play the role of SoYun in the spy series that will be written by "Heroes" creator Tim Kring.

According to Deadline, Han's character on "Treadstone" is a wife and mother who has been living a quiet life in North Korea. Things change for her, however, when she uncovers some secrets about her past.

"Treadstone" is a spinoff of the Jason Bourne movies that starred Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner. The show will explore the origins of the CIA black ops group where Damon's Jason Bourne character trained and where Renner's Aaron Cross worked as well.  Damon and Renner, however, won't be in the TV spinoff.

The Bourne movies revealed that Operation Treadstone was a covert government program that trained assassins to develop nearly superhuman capabilities through behavior modification. The members of Treadstone are sleeper agents that one day "wake up" from the life they thought they knew to continue their mission to kill.

Aside from Han, "Treadstone" will also star Omar Metwally ("The Affair"), Tracey Ifeachor ("Quantico"), Gabrielle Scharnitzky ("The Game") and Emilia Schüle ("Berlin Station"). Metwally will play an ostracized CIA agent, while Ifeachor's role will be that of an investigative journalist. Scharnitzky and Schüle, on the other hand, are going to be Russian patriots. These actors will join Jeremy Irvine ("War Horse") and Brian J. Smith ("Sense8") who were signed to the show last November.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Irvine will play one of the main characters, CIA spy J. Randolph Bentley, who has been tasked to eliminate key people involved in an international conspiracy. Smith, on the other hand, will play Doug McKenna, an oil-rig worker who discovers he's a sleeper agent.

USA Network originally planned for a pilot order for "Treadstone" but decided that the show will get a straight-to-series order instead. It's unclear, however, when production will begin.

"Treadstone" comes from Universal Cable Productions and Kring will also serve as the show's executive producer, along with Ben Smith, Jeffrey Weiner, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, and Justin Levy. Ramin Bahrani will direct the pilot episode.

The Bourne spinoff has no air date on USA Network so far. Principal filming will likely begin in the Spring.
