'The Last Kingdom' Season 4 Spoilers: Will Uhtred's Evil Uncle Return?
Will "The Last Kingdom" season 4 revive the clash between Uhtred and his uncle Aelfric? Speculations suggest that it might just be one of the main storylines of the upcoming season if the show sticks with what happens in the books.
Actor Joseph Millson played the character in the show's first and second season. Aelfric was largely non-existent in the third season but that could change in the upcoming installment.
Following the timeline of the previous installments, "The Last Kingdom" season 4 should be moving on to cover books seven and eight of the "Saxon Stories" from author Bernard Cornwell. "The Pagan Lord" and "The Empty Throne," which were released in 2013 and 2014 respectively, featured the return of Aelfric as Uhtred will once again stake his claim of Bebbanburg, his ancestral land, as per Den of Geek.
But will "The Last Kingdom" season 4 recast the role of Aelfric to feature an older uncle? By this time, the character should be in the prime of his years as much as Uhtred has aged as well. Apparently, "The Pagan Lord" and the "The Empty Throne" will significantly jump to 10 years, putting Uhtred in his late 40s or early 50s.
"The Last Kingdom" originally premiered in the U.K. first via BBC 2 in 2015. The show was later aired in the U.S. and the rest of the world through BBC America and Netflix. By the third season, however, Netflix became the sole producer of the series. The platform launched season 3 with 10 episodes in November 2018 and Netflix renewed the show for season 4 for another 10 episodes the following month.
According to Hidden Remote, word of the renewal wasn't expected until February 2019. But Netflix's decision may prove just how much the show is popular on the streaming platform.
Production of "The Last Kingdom" season 4, however, has not yet kicked off. It may be a while before fans get word on the latest in the show since the gap between season 2 and season 3 also took almost 18 months to delivery.
Meanwhile, the stars of "The Last Kingdom" are currently working on different projects so this might have an effect on the filming schedule for season 4. Alexander Dreymon, who leads the show as Uhtred, is currently promoting his film "Heartlock" with "Lucifer" star Lesley-Ann Brand. Millie Brady, who plays the Lady of Mercia Aethelflaed, is still tied to the production of "The Witcher" in Hungary and Spain.
Toby Regbo, who plays Aethelred, will be on the set of the "Game of Thrones" prequel beginning February. James Northcote, who's Aethelred's right-hand man Aldhelm, recently wrapped up work on "Catherine the Great" for HBO.
