The recently concluded fourth season of Outlander introduced its most brutal villain in Stephen Bonnet (played by Ed Speleers). While he was sent to be hanged for another crime, viewers gasped upon seeing that Stephen managed to escape his captors in the last few minutes of the season finale.

With the villain roaming free, the life of Brianna (played by Sophie Skelton), whom Stephen sexually assaulted, will surely be in danger in Outlander season 5. If producers were to closely follow the book source written by Diana Gabaldon, then viewers should be anticipating an epic battle between Stephen and the Frasers in the next installment.

According to the renewal announcement on DeadlineOutlander season 5 will be based on Gabaldon's The Fiery Cross and it picks up right where the season 4 ended. The Frasers may believe Stephen did not make it out alive in that prison explosion but the book says otherwise.

According to Express, Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) immediately learn in the opening of The Fiery Cross that Stephen is alive. So, they devise a plan to protect their daughter and her baby.

Jamie and Bree's new husband Roger (played by Richard Rankin) will try to track Stephen down. Claire and Bree, on the other hand, will hide away with baby Jeremiah. Only, Stephen does find Bree and kidnaps her baby because he believes he's the father. The book ends with Bree finding her child and shooting Stephen in the process.

It's unclear, however, if "Outlander" season 5 will follow the events of the book to the letter. But since this is a major storyline in the original source then it would make sense for fans to assume that Stephen is returning to cause more problems for the Frasers.

What will make Outlander season 5 exciting for the fans who have read the books, however, is to see how Jamie and Roger deal with their rage for Stephen. Will Roger be more vengeful in the TV show than in the books since his character had a more established friendship with the villain in the series?

The saga of the Frasers against Stephen won't end with Outlander season 5 though. Starz also renewed the show for a sixth season, where Stephen's evil presence will still linger.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew will soon return to production. However, it may be a while before the new episodes air since work on this show is expected to be completed by between fall or winter 2019. Fans are already bracing for another "droughtlander", or a long break between seasons since the fifth installment is projected to air in Spring 2020.
