Things are moving along swiftly for the start of the production of The Umbrella Academy season 2. However, fans might have to brace themselves for a long wait for the episodes to drop on Netflix since it may not happen until late 2020 or early 2021.

In recent weeks, the official Twitter account of The Umbrella Academy season 2 has been posting teasers of the next installment. The script for the first episode has been completed, and the crew has also been preparing the set for the whole team to return to work soon.

But The Umbrella Academy season 2 showrunner Steve Blackman told IndieWire it takes at least 18 months to complete the show's production. Given this timeline, if the series starts work on the second season in June, then the show could be ready for streaming on Netflix by late 2020 or early 2021.

This doesn't mean, however, that The Umbrella Academy season 2 is delayed off schedule. The first season launched on Netflix in February 2019 after preparations in late 2017. The cast and crew, however, filmed for seven months in Toronto in 2018, while additional photography and post-production took place for the rest of that year.

The people behind the show implied that they aren't in a rush to make The Umbrella Academy season 2 or even the seasons after that. The writers of the source material, Gerard Way and Gabriel Bà, who are also the producers on the series said that they don't want the Netflix show to be ahead of the graphic novels.

"The goal for us is to stay ahead of the show," Way told IndieWire. "Since we're on Series 3 [of the comics], we are now ahead of the show. So that's a good thing."

Meanwhile, fans have been speculating on what will likely happen to The Umbrella Academy season 2 based on the teasers posted on social media. The first episode back is titled "Right Back Where We Started." Could it be another flashback story on the Hargreeves siblings in their younger years with their father?

The first season ended with an unsettling cliffhanger that saw the siblings trying to save one of their own from crossing over to the dark side. While Vanya Hargreeves (played by Ellen Page) discovered she was the most powerful of her brothers and sister, Allison Hargreeves (played by Emmy Raver-Lampman) had lost her ability to speak. Thus, she can no longer use her powers.
