Disney Finally Breaks Silence About The Main Street Cinema's Change That Disneyland Fans Dislike
Disney finally breaks its silence about the upgrade it did in one of its classic attractions in Disneyland, the Main Street Cinema. A lot of fans have expressed their dislike to the company's new move, causing an uproar among frequent guests and longtime park goers.
"We continue to operate Main Street Cinema as a theater and there have been no changes to film showings," a Disney spokesperson said in a statement, via Fox News. "We're looking at a variety of ways to drive interest in this beloved location."
Ever since Disneyland opened in 1955, the Main Street Cinema had been one of its famous attractions. Here, guests could come and take a rest while watching classic Disney animated shorts and enjoying the air conditioning.
However, although Disney is continuously showing the old cartoons visitors used to see, it adds merchandise inside the location. It is still called the Main Street Cinema, but it now has a cash register and several for sale displays like headbands, coffee mugs, and other souvenirs.
Fans dislike the new addition and air their complaints online. Some even intentionally use social media to let Disney know that never like the change.
A fan said on Twitter that what Disney did is a disgrace to what Walt Disney, the company's founder, intended for the use of the Main Street Cinema. Another one added the place used to be one of the calmest places to relax, sit, and watch cartoons in the park. As there are a lot of stores on Main Street, they ask the company to leave the cinema alone.
However, there are some Disneyland fans who hope the change will help the Main Street Cinema to have more visitors just like in the earlier days, Orange County Register reported. The same attraction at Disney's Magic Kingdom in Florida was already converted to a store in 1998 due to the lack of people going in.
In a tweet by the Disney fan site and podcast Disneyland Gazette, it said the Main Street Cinema is indeed the beloved and amazing part of Disneyland's history. But, almost no one is visiting the place anymore. It also explained there is nothing wrong with adding new ideas to the place to use its space.
The Main Street Cinema honors the Disney film studio's original shorts and the cartoons that help established Disneyland. It is even billed as the "nostalgic journey back to the beginning of Disney animation."
The classic Disneyland attraction still features six to eight minutes Disney animated shorts that originally aired before the full-length feature films were introduced. The 1928 Steamboat Willie is the place's marquee film, which was voiced and directed by Walt Disney himself.
