Things will be more complicated for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), and Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) come Grey's Anatomy Season 16. Meredith may face serious legal battle after the insurance-fraud issue, and Andrew will be not out of trouble.
In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Krista Vernoff revealed that she and the show writers had "painted their selves into a corner" when Andrew took the blame for Meredith's mistake. If the two manage to get through this problem in the new season, she said Andrew has to learn to let Meredith stand on her fights.
To recall, Meredith already taught Andrew to let her do her thing when she told him he needed to develop some instinct for self-preservation if they are going to be together. She also added Andrew has to trust her to stand in her truth.
"That was her teaching him what it is to be with her and more will be revealed," Vernoff said about Grey's Anatomy Season 16. According to CarterMatt, Meredith's last speech to Andrew in Season 15 finale shouldn't be taken negatively.
Meredith was only teaching Andrew to walk on her path while he was trying to bring her along on his own. As fans don't know much about Andrew like they know Meredith, there are a lot of things to learn about him. Andrew still has a lot of insecurities, knowing that he is not even sure what kind of doctor he wants to be, unlike Meredith, who is already established.
In Season 15's last few episodes, Andrew tried to take the blame after Meredith committed insurance fraud to help a father and daughter to look for asylum to save the latter's life. When Andrew got jailed, Meredith intended to come clean to the police. However, their future remained unclear in Grey's Anatomy Season 16 with what they did, per Digital Spy.
As a couple, Vernoff said this situation explained that Andrew needed to learn from experience. Her speech even taught him what it is like to be with her, and it is only a small instance of her extraordinary life. Will Andrew get used to it?
Meanwhile, fans will continue to see Meredith, possibly still with Andrew, for two more years, ABC announced. So after the new season, Season 17 will surely be in the works. The network has yet to announce the exact release date of Grey's Anatomy Season 16, but it earlier announced the new episodes are set to be out in September.
