'The Winds Of Winter' Delays Allegedly Caused By George RR Martin And HBO Deal; GRRM Reveals 'TWOW' Status
George R.R. Martin has been giving hints on the official release date of The Winds of Winter. Most fans are aware that the sixth installment of the A Song of Ice and Fire was first announced in 2011. However, up until now, the 70-year-old American writer has not yet published the much-awaited novel. Now, avid followers of the book series are wondering when TWOW would hit the bookshelves.
Since there are limited details about the book, some fans were forced to create theories and predictions about The Winds of Winter. As a matter of fact, a recent fan theory suggested that George R.R. Martin had finished writing the sixth volume of the A Song of Ice and Fire already. A Reedit user claimed that the popularity of the Game of Thrones television series is among the primary reasons behind the tome's countless delays.
The fan, who hides in the FanTheory pseudonym, stated that George R.R. Martin and his publisher signed a deal with HBO. It added that the network had to take advantage of the fame that Game of Thrones had enjoyed over the years, adding that the network earned a lot of money from GOT merchandise. So, the fan suggested that releasing The Winds of Winter before the series ended would never be a good idea.
"How come George RR Martin finished Fire & Blood? If a writer is doing other projects that means he is finished with his main projects," the fan wrote in a Reedit thread about the forthcoming The Winds of Winter. "It is very odd that George had time to write 736 page book, and currently working on a video game. Something smells fishy?" he went on.
Though some parts of the fan theory made sense, George R.R. Martin had, already, debunked the reports saying that he had an agreement with HBO to delay The Winds of Winter book. The veteran writer called the notion "absurd" since delaying a novel that could help him, and his publishers earn millions of dollars "makes no sense" to him. GRRM insisted there was no deal to hold back on the two last novels of the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
"No, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring are not finished. Dream is not even begun; I am not going to start writing volume seven until I finish volume six," George R.R. Martin wrote on his "Not A Blog" site in May 2019. Hence, avid followers of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series should take these baseless claims with a grain of salt.
