Online retail giant Amazon just opened its biggest office building ever, but it's not located in the United States. The company's new office building was opened in the Indian city of Hyderabad, right in the middle of its financial district.

The US tech firm officially opened its new 9.5-acre campus on Wednesday. The building sports 1.8 million square feet of office space, earning it the title as the company's single largest building in the world in terms of total area.

According to the company, the building can accommodate up to 15,000 employees or roughly a quarter of its full-time Indian workforce. Amazon currently employs around 62,000 full-time workers in India, with an additional 155,000 contract-based employees.

Amazon's India unit head, Amit Agarwal, mentioned in a statement that the new campus in Hyderabad is a clear sign of Amazon's long-term commitment to the country. Amazon's vice president of global real estate and facilities, John Schoettler, also echoed the same sentiments. The executive mentioned that the company is looking forward to creating long-term innovations in the country.

India is currently the company's second-largest base of operations, right behind the United States. It is also interesting to note that the company's new Hyderabad office building is the only overseas campus that Amazon fully owns.

Amazon has revealed plans to further expand its Indian campus. The company announced that it will eventually be expanding the Hyderabad campus to cover a total of 68 acres. Aside from Amazon, Hyderabad also hosts a number of big-name companies including Microsoft's Indian headquarters and Ikea's first store in the country.

For the past couple of years, Amazon has been heavily investing in its Indian business unit. Billions of dollars were poured into the country to expand the company's business to take on rivals such as Walmart. According to Morgan Stanley, India's e-commerce market is expected to be worth around $200 billion by 2027.

India currently has more than 600 million internet users, with millions more coming online each and every day. Amazon is well aware of that fact and of the high potential for profit with the varying types of services that it offers.

As more and more Indians get access to the internet, Amazon is banking on the fact that a vast majority of them will be purchasing products online.

Amazon is also well aware that India provides a lot of potential for its Prime Video streaming service as more users shift from traditional television to internet-based content. To take advantage of the trend, Amazon even recently launched a full Hindi-version of its mobile app for Indian users.
