'Wentworth' Season 8 Premiere Date, Spoilers: From Renewal To 'The Freak' Return; Everything You Need To Know
Wentworth Season 8 has been put into jeopardy, but fans didn't let it happen. With a major Season 7 cliffhanger, revealing Joan "The Freak" Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) is still alive; viewers started a campaign to save the show.
Foxtel took a while before it renewed the show for another season that made fans worried for its future. To add fuel to the fire, there were even rumors the show might get canceled and never see the light of the day.
So, fans quickly launched a full-on Save Wentworth campaign on the petition website Change.org. The appeal noted Foxtel had decided to cancel the show after Season 7, which was devastating news to the legion of fans across the world that remained dedicated and supported the show from the very beginning.
With over 20,000 supporters, it was no surprise Foxtel ordered for a new set of episodes for Wentworth Season 8. In a press release, the network said the series has effectively captivated the Australian audience and other people around the world due to its "gritty nail-biting storylines, remarkable performances with its extensive ensemble cast and high production values."
To celebrate the renewal, Foxtel even extended Season 8 by making it 20 episodes long. "The commissioning of these additional episodes will see it reach an extraordinary 100 episodes," the statement continued.
So, what fans will see in the new season? According to Express, Wentworth Season 8 will explore the return of Joan. By the looks of it, The Freak is very much alive and managed to escape the wooden coffin-like box she was buried into.
In an interview with TV Week, Rabe revealed she had no idea whether her character was still "alive, dead, or disappeared." "She was buried alive in the box, and who knows what will become of her? Who knows if she's really gone?" she said.
But as Rabe seemed to be back in the new season, she admitted she felt grateful to be cast in the series and even called it an "opportunity of a lifetime." With the positive response the show continuously receives all over the world and the attention she gets, it just blows her mind.
Foxtel has yet to announce when Wentworth Season 8 will be out, but it is expected for release either in 2020 or 2021. The show's production reportedly starts in September, and it may take it a little while before the filming gets completed, given that it now has 20 episodes to feature.
