'Queen Sugar' Season 5 Premiere Date, Spoilers: Showrunner Hints Season 4 Finale Is A Give Away To New Season's Story
Just after the Season 4 finale made fans clamor for more, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) announced the coming of Queen Sugar Season 5. Creator Ava DuVernay and executive producer Oprah Winfrey quickly heard viewers' cry and ordered for a new set of episodes. Now that the Bordelon family's story will continue, what will happen to the lives of Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe)?
"I'm thrilled to further explore the beauty, pain, and triumph of this African-American family, with hopes that their story will continue to resonate with audiences who see themselves in the Bordelons," DuVernay said about the renewal, via Deadline. The 47-year-old filmmaker continued to say it was an honor to create the show with Warner Horizon and OWN with their "wonderful and rock-solid" support.
Winfrey, on the other hand, added every Borderlon character feels like a family to them. Just like fans, the 65-year-old media executive is excited to see what DuVernay has to unfold to the lives of this family.
OWN boss Tina Perry also has her sentiments about Queen Sugar Season 5. She sees DuVernay's vision for the series is inspired storytelling. Hence, the way she executes this vision results in a very remarkable series that makes them all proud.
"Her leadership and creative spirit - including the commitment to exclusively hire female directors and establish an inclusive crew - is unprecedented and evident throughout each episode of this beautiful series," she went on to say. Perry admitted they are grateful to have DuVernay and her entire team, composed of talented writers, producers, cast, and crew, and they, too, are now looking forward to the new season.
In a different interview, showrunner Anthony Sparks revealed they haven't started working on Queen Sugar Season 5 yet. Although he has no idea what will exactly happen, the previous season finale already gave away where the story will go.
In some ways, fans will never know what is going to happen because of the unexpected twists. However, as the finale revealed they are all grounded and there is a new territory broken for almost all of the characters, there is a big possibility they will continue moving to this new ground in the new season.
OWN has yet to reveal how many episodes Queen Sugar Season 5 will entail. Like Season 1, 3, and 4 all had 13 episodes and Season 2 got 16, it is quite hard to predict its number of episodes. The network is also yet to unveil its release date, although it is expected to be out in 2020.
